Occupy Wall Street: Lemony Snicket's view

I really hope you have read books written by Lemony Snicket. Despite the candy bar sounding name, the man's cleverly intelligent. He incorporates humor into his dark tales of characters searching for goodness.

I think you should read this. It's Thirteen Observations made by Lemony Snicket while watching Occupy Wall Street from a Discreet Distance. Such truth. Click here.

My favorites are observations 3, 4, 7 and 11.

11. Historically, a story about people inside impressive buildings ignoring or even taunting people standing outside shouting at them turns out to be a story with an unhappy ending.

4. People who say money doesn’t matter are like people who say cake doesn’t matter—it’s probably because they’ve already had a few slices.

I was in Portland on Saturday to cheer for Natalie's 10K race, and saw the close up view of Occupy Portland. It looked similar to trying to cram ten families into one camping spot. I joked with Natalie that I was going to start an Occupy School Parking Lots movement, whereupon we won't leave until there are 25 or fewer students per classroom, because much about our educational system is just wrong. What do you think about "occupying" places?

  1. I fear the end will be similar to what happened here in Spain:

1.- A little group of people decide to stay in the Puerta del Sol after a demonstration.
2.- More people get interested and the group grows.
3.- Politics and mass media initially ignore them.
4.- The group keeps growing in all parts of Spain. Mass media gives some attention, politics don't understand who organizes it -they can't understand it's just people, not a party, trade union...-
5.- Politics and people in media start asking the people to make specific proposals.
6a.- People fall into the trap and make a lot of specific proposals. When people goes into specific proposals they start forgetting the main target: giving more power to democracy for not being governed by companies and politics that only listen to these companies, not the people that are voting them.
6b.- Some political parties start to say stupid things like these people are left radicals or are supported by ETA. Other parties try to get some votes in a miserable way, they don't understand this doesn't have a left-right ideology, it's against all of them because they are the same thing with little differences.
7.- After some time people start losing interest because they see there's no progress.
8.- From time to time there are new demonstrations but this is going nowhere.

And this is in Spain with a 21% unemployment rate.
